Labs and Facilities

Fluid Mechanics Laboratory

The fluid mechanics lab is equipped to perform and demonstrate a number of experiments that provide undergraduate students with the practical applications of fluid mechanics. The lab includes Hydrostatic Pressure Apparatus to measure hydrostatic forces on submerged bodies. In addition, the Orifice and Jet Apparatus allows students to compare between actual and jet trajectories and to calculate the coefficient of discharge for various orifices. Moreover, students get their hands on the different methods of flow measurement. The Fluid Friction, Bends and Fitting apparatus allows students to determine major and minor losses in pipes. The Pipe Network Apparatus includes the facilities to measure flow and pressure drops in a wide range of network configuration, e.g. individual pipes, series pipes and parallel pipes. The lab is also equipped with a Flow Visualization Channel for conducting several applications in open channels such as hydraulic jump, discharge under sluice gate and energy equation. Furthermore, the Osborne Reynold’s Apparatus facilitates the demonstration of laminar and turbulent flow.

Materials/Structures Laboratory

The materials/structures lab is equipped with several testing apparatuses specifically chosen to demonstrate a wide variety of experiments necessary to enhance the students’ knowledge in materials engineering as well as structural theory. The lab houses a 150 kN Instron Universal Testing Machine used to demonstrate tension, compression and flexure experiments on various types of building materials; multiple sets for aggregates classification, including sieve sets for aggregate size analysis; and multiple sets of slump cones and cube and cylindrical moulds. A 2000 kN Autocon concrete compressive strength machine is also available. The lab is also equipped with a range of non-destructive testing tools including Shmidt Hammer and ultrasonic kit for assessing the compressive strength of concrete, and a Profometer that detects bar location and orientation, bar size, and concrete cover. A RAB Rockwell/Brinell hardness tester is also available and allows the students to measure the hardness of different materials. A wide range of experiments that demonstrate concepts in mechanics of materials and structural analysis are available and incorporated into several courses throughout the curriculum. Among these experiments are the beam deflection test, torsion test on shafts and tubes, bending test, unsymmetric bending of beams, and buckling of struts.

Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory

The geotechnical lab occupies more than 200 square meters of lab space, in addition to facilities within the fluid mechanics and materials labs. The lab houses multiple sets for soil classification and testing, including Casagrande and fall cone devices for liquid and plastic limits, sieve sets for particle size analysis, and manual and automatic compaction devices. Four panel stations are available for constant head and falling head permeability testing, including rigid and flexible wall permeameters. Other automated testing equipment include a pneumatic consolidation apparatus, and a direct shear apparatus. Unconfined compression loading frames and triaxial cells are also available for shear strength testing of soil specimens.
