AUD hosts international seminar on Sustainable Concrete
"The partnership between AUD and EcoSmart to organize this workshop highlights Dubai's leadership role in support of sustainable development and green construction"

8 November 2007 The American University in Dubai hosted a seminar on Sustainable Concrete in association with EcoSmart, a Canadian non-profit organization that promotes technology transfer of environmentally friendly products. The seminar, which was attended by a large number of executives, managers, structure engineers, and AUD engineering faculty, focused on the advantages and planning for green buildings; materials and computer modeling for concrete durability; tests on, designs for and performance of EcoSmart Concrete; and the implications of EcoSmart Concrete for structural design and construction.

Presentations by representatives of the Government of Canada focused on Canada's reasons for supporting EcoSmart's work, and on its link to climate change. "The partnership between AUD and EcoSmart to organize this workshop highlights Dubai's leadership role in support of sustainable development and green construction," commented Dr. Alaa Ashmawy, AUD's Dean of Engineering. " The AUD School of Engineering will continue to collaborate with local and international organizations in pursuit of sustainable environmental and energy practices in urban development."

Participants learned from experienced industry professionals about the benefits of green building technology including the potential for earning greenhouse gas emission credits. Keynote speakers included high profile local and international professionals, including Nils Larsson, Executive Director of the International Initiative for the Sustainable Built Environment, and Jacques Marchand Professor of Civil Engineering and Canada Research Chair at Laval University in Quebec, Canada. The professional panel stressed the importance of sustainability in construction in a time when climate change is having a global impact on building design and operation. Durability and related materials selection in major UAE construction projects were also highlighted, along with advanced modeling for concrete durability and long-term performance of EcoSmart Concrete. The two-day event was attended by more than 150 delegates.
