Students in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Program at the American University in Dubai (AUD) have won the first prize in the IEEE Competition for the 4th year in a row. The competition, held at the Petroleum Institute in Abu Dhabi, brings together Engineering Schools from all over the UAE.
Under the supervision of Professor of Computer Engineering Dr. Wathiq Mansoor , students Bassilio Dahlan, Milad Abbasi and Parham Honarbakhsh worked on their senior design project for Electrical and Computer Engineering Program: a Sound Source Localization for Automatic Camera Steering - a system that is capable of directing a video camera to the source of the sound within a certain environment. The project has huge applications such as video conferencing, security monitoring systems, among others.
Commenting on the challenges of designing and implementing such a project, Dr. Mansoor said the project was "indeed a challenging one; only students at top universities worldwide would be able to design such a system. The quality of this project reflects the high standards of teaching at the School of Engineering at AUD, and proves that we are forming engineers who are excellent designers and innovators."
“It was our last project at AUD, so we gave it all the time and effort it deserves from day one ”, explains Bassilio Dahlan . “ I am very proud of our achievement in the IEEE Competition; it really demonstrates the high standards of engineering education at AUD”. Team member Parham Honarbakhsh echoed the same spirit, saying that “the experience I had with this project was unique." He added that teamwork and hard effort paid off. He thanked his professors for their support, "especially Dr. Wathiq Mansoor our project supervisor, Dr. Reza Khosravani who was there all the time to assist us, Dr. Colin Christy, and Dr. Ali El Haj Mahmoud for giving us ideas”.
Commenting on the students' performance, Dr. Hamid Shafiee , Chair of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, said the School is "proud of our students who won the IEEE Senior Design Competition this year. Winning this award four years in a row is a truly outstanding achievement for our students as well as our faculty members. We are committed to maintaining and strengthening our leadership position in offering a world-class engineering education to our students in the UAE ". The students plan to take their project to the next step by participating in regaional and international competitions over the coming year. |
